A useful tree inspection considers the whole tree, its growing environment and what could be struck—not merely one alarming feature. We begin with the reason for the inspection, then evaluate visible conditions from the root flare and base through the trunk, major limbs and crown.
The purpose is to understand what is happening and determine an appropriate next step. An inspection does not automatically mean recommending tree removal.

What we look for during a tree inspection
Root flare, base and trunk
Visible root loss or damage, grade changes, cavities, decay indicators, trunk condition, lean and movement.
Crown condition
Dead or declining portions, canopy thinning, changes in vigor, pests, pathogens and other visible signs of stress.
Site and targets
Soil, irrigation, recent construction, prevailing exposure and targets such as homes, parking, roads, play areas and other occupied spaces.
The recommendation should fit the observed conditions
Depending on the tree and site, the appropriate response may be periodic monitoring, corrective pruning, reducing excessive limb leverage, changing irrigation or grade conditions, further assessment, or removal when the concern cannot reasonably be reduced another way.
The scope of an inspection is established for the individual situation; a site visit should not be assumed to include a formal written report or advanced diagnostic testing. An ISA Certified Arborist® with ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) is on staff.
