Pruning with purpose
We prune to solve a specific problem: weak structure, deadwood, end weight, clearance, storm exposure, previous damage or a view that can be opened without ruining the crown.
We do not use climbing spikes on trees being retained. We avoid indiscriminate thinning and unnecessary heading cuts. The finished tree should look balanced and largely untouched—not stripped out.

Why we do not top trees
Topping removes large portions of a tree’s leaf-bearing crown. It can initiate decay, starve the tree and stimulate weakly attached shoots that become future hazards. It also creates repeated maintenance rather than lasting size control.
